• Every aspect of this endeavor, from conception to fruition will be documented and made available in a variety of media. As the project progresses methods for broad public participation will be developed.

• Although September 11th would be an ideal date, this memorial is not tied to a timeline and can occur around any one of the many significant dates or anniversaries.

• The viewing area will include locations around the world.

• International cooperation and participation are critical elements of the project. As is the support and cooperation of a broad cross section of the space community.

• There are a few options as to how to these "stars" could get into orbit.

1."Fly as a “hitchhiker” payload on the Space Shuttle. However, there is quite a backlog of these payloads already and NASA will likely not consider any new ones until the International Space Station is fully assembled.

2. Use a Russian launch vehicle. This would help keep costs down compared to using a dedicated US launch vehicle, but it can sometimes be difficult to launch US satellites on foreign vehicles.

3. Sharing a “piggyback” ride with another satellite on a small launch vehicle such as the Pegasus would also keep the costs down. The Pegasus is unique because it is launched in the air over the ocean from an L-1011 airliner. Therefore, it can be launched in any direction and at any time.

4. A full “non-piggyback” Pegasus mission is about $16 million, which does not include the spacecraft being launched. The
estimated costs of construction of an individual spacecraft for this project range between $5 million to $10 million depending on the complexity and precision desired.

• Estimated cost of the memorial: $20 million.

• Along with the pellets representing the lives lost on 9/11, thousands of smaller grains will be dispersed to insure adequate coverage.

• Cities and citizens will be encouraged to "dim the lights" in remembrance and to assist viewing in metropolitan areas.

ï The project will not to be exploited commercially, although we are seeking funds from the private and public sector.

ï This is global fireworks and does not represent military zeal.
