CORE Design Studio was selected by METRO to create a unique public artwork
that integrated their new building lobby and ride store with the adjoining
Transit Center, sidewalks and Light Rail Station.
The artwork concept, literally cuts through and across the grid of the city
connecting the different elements in the building and outside, as METRO bridges
and connects the various communities in the city. These “Crossroads”
appear as infinite lines or colored planes giving the illusion of a shaft
of light that visitors can pass through and over. The lines contain poems/haiku
in etched stainless steel that reflect the diverse communities of Houston
and the notion of travel and movement, a sort of ephemeral “commuter
experience” in word. The project was never incorporated into the final
design of the building.
