Artwork and design of METRO light rail station, SMITHLANDS.

Smith Lands station is set within the background of the Texas Medical Center in proximity to some of the nations leading scientific research facilities. We used the concept of time and the accurate measurement of the passage of time as an indispensable element of the scientific method. Moving the length of the station, passengers see time-lapse sequences of natural processes small and large: seeds grow into trees; continents shift and collide; stars coalesce, burn bright and collapse and explode into their fundamental elements. The paving pattern, based on increments of ten, reinforces the notions of scientific measurement.
